High-Performing Windows, Curtain Wall, Storefront Framing and Entrances Help Create Luxury Mixed-Use Development in Downtown Milwaukee

NORCROSS, GA – A range of products and systems by Kawneer Company, Inc. and Traco were used to help create The Moderene, a luxury high-rise and mixed-use development in downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The building will be completed in September and is set to be the tallest structure west of the Milwaukee River.

Characterized by curving forms, continuous horizontal and vertical lines and a classic, yet modern exterior, this 30-story high-rise incorporates luxury condominiums, executive apartments, extensive parking and ground floor retail space. The building, designed by Milwaukee-based Rinka Chung Architecture and intended to be the new flagship of Milwaukee’s downtown redevelopment, incorporates several products from the recently combined Kawneer and Traco portfolios including: TR-700 Window WallTR-2800 and TR-2500 2-1/2" Architectural Thermal Aluminum Windows; NX-8900 Series Terrace Doors1600 Wall System®1 Curtain WallTrifab® VersaGlaze® (VG) Storefront Framing Systems; and 350 Medium Stile Entrances.

Construction for the $55.3 million building began in February of 2011. Klein-Dickert Milwaukee, Inc. joined the project early on as the glazing contractor and installer. To meet the design needs of the architect and owner, products used on the building not only needed to have strong aesthetic and performance capabilities, but also meet the technical and engineering needs required by the project.

The TR-700 Window Wall features a slab to slab application and slab edge cover, which help deliver the desired sleek and streamlined appearance of the building. The system also featured 90-degree custom corners with narrow sightlines, which helped the architect achieve their design objectives. Additionally, the system can be pre-engineered and pre-glazed, eliminating much of the labor and time spent on-site.

Kawneer’s 1600 Wall System®1 Curtain Wall, Trifab® VersaGlaze® Storefront Framing Systems and 350 Medium Stile Entrances were used on the lower levels of the building to provide its smooth, retro-futuristic appearance. Additionally, the design of the curtain wall mimics the curvature of the building, which required curved glass and embeds to anchor the system due to the post tension slabs. The entire building team worked closely with the engineers to ensure the glass could be installed correctly and all anchors were secure.

“It is always exciting to see a large-scale project, such as The Moderne, take advantage of the diversity and depth of our product portfolio,” said Kimberly Ferro, Vice President, Marketing and Product Development for Kawneer North America. “We are continually developing systems and solutions to meet the broadest possible range of design and performance requirements integral to buildings today.  With The Moderne, we were privileged to contribute to a building that pushes the boundaries of architectural system performance while adding a compelling new design element to the Milwaukee skyline.”
