Geisinger Center for Health Research
Sustainability Beyond Green Building
Geisinger Center for Health Research (GCHR) is committed to addressing national health issues and improving the effectiveness of healthcare through research and technology. The one-of-a-kind GCHR facility, with its deep mullion covers that follow the lines of the building, is an outside reflection of the cutting-edge work being conducted within its unique curve shaped walls.
Use and manipulation of natural daylight in the building design was a key component in helping generate LEED certification points. The 63,000 square foot project features Kawneer curtain walls, which help to provide window views for more than 90 percent of the office space as well as interior light.
When adding new buildings to its Danville campus, Geisinger often relies upon its dealings with local architects, businesses and manufacturers. The close proximity of Kawneer’s Bloomsburg manufacturing facility along with the use of recycled LEED billet helped contribute to the LEED Materials and Resources category.
While the GCHR building has achieved LEED Silver certification, the project itself encompasses the broader definition of sustainability. It is truly remarkable - not only because of its distinctive curving walls and “green” design components, but also because of the greater work that is done within; work done for the people.
