Architecture Stars of Tomorrow Design State-of-the-Art Facilities with Thermal Performance in Mind

February 12, 2008 – The American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) and Kawneer Company, Inc., announce the winners of the second annual national student design competition.  The competition, which was sponsored by Kawneer and administered by AIAS, challenged students to design a pediatric outpatient rehabilitation center and family support facility using architectural aluminum building products and systems.  The University of Kentucky’s Danny Ruberg took home first place and $2,500 for his innovative and efficient design.

Participants were required to select a site located in an area of the United States that experiences extremes in temperature (both hot and cold), and then design a facility utilizing sustainable and universal design principles. Competition objectives included developing knowledge about materials, products and installation. Submissions were evaluated based on ingenuity and originality, as well as appropriate use of thermal products and design clarity.

Three winning designs and three honorable mentions were selected by the competition’s jury. The winning projects will be exhibited in the AIAS Student Lounge and Gallery at the 2008 AIA National Convention and Design Exposition in Boston, May 15-17, 2008, and will be published in the Spring 2008 issue of Crit, the Journal of the AIAS. In addition to the prize money awarded to the individual winners, the AIAS chapter at each school will also receive a cash grant.

The prizes were awarded as follows:

  • Danny Ruberg – University of Kentucky
First Prize ($2500)  An articulate, elegant solution to the design challenge, Ruberg’s project showed a good use of green space and architectural aluminum products (by Kawneer).  The building’s well-devised floor plan created an easy, uncomplicated traffic flow, while separating the functions of the center appropriately.

  • Rachel Glabe – Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo
Second Prize ($1500)  Set in a challenging urban city, this creative project featured a whimsical facility that was playful without being “kitschy.” In addition, the housing was utilized above street level, making the most of the site and the opportunities.

  • Michael Hartke, Jonathan Rynish & Joshua Forseth – University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
Third Place ($750)  Demonstrating a creative use of the Kawneer thermal products, this project’s site and location were well planned and considered. Functional areas were well separated within the facility, and there was a nice integration of the land and the building. The influence of nature on the building was also evident.

The jury awarded Honorable Mentions ($500) to the following: Jonathan C.T. Garland (Boston Architectural College), Tyler A. Polich (University of Oregon) and Ho Lee (University of Oregon).
