Glazing systems from Kawneer are to be used on Cardiff Business School.

Curtain walling, windows and doors by leading architectural aluminium supplier Kawneer are to feature on Cardiff University’s new Business School.

Designed by Boyes Rees Architects to achieve a BREEAM “Excellent” rating, the £10million Postgraduate Centre is proposed as a modern and contemporary landmark building that pays due respect to the local existing materials and reflects these throughout. The two wings of the building, being of different heights, will also be treated in different fashions to reduce the mass and break up the elevations.

Materials include Kawneer’s AA®100 zone-drained capped curtain walling linking two curved terracotta-clad elevations and Structurally Silicone Glazed curtain walling to an external twin-wall façade with internal walkway.

In addition, Kawneer’s AA®541 top-hung casement windows feature as insert vents in the curtain walling, complemented by AA®605 low/medium-duty swing doors, AA®3720 folding/sliding doors to the rear of the link atrium and series 190 heavy-duty commercial entrance doors.

These will be installed by Kawneer-approved specialist sub-contractor Dudleys Architectural Aluminium for main contractor ISG Construction with completion due in August 2014.

The concept for the design of the new Cardiff Business School is for a flexible teaching space with modular office allocations that can adapt to the changing needs and requirements of a modern and innovative approach to teaching methods.

The ground floor of the building will house predominately flexible teaching space. A number of acoustic partitions in the two-storey and four-storey wings will allow for flexible usage. The two-storey wing contains a large 250-seat auditorium and is placed just off the central breakout space which also accommodates a small café area.

The first floor will also house flexible teaching space, a 153-seat auditorium, office space and a postgraduate common room. The second floor will house plant space and another postgraduate common room with roof access to an external patio and bio-diversity roof. The four-storey wing will again house office facilities and will be repeated on the next two floors above.

The 0.65-hectare site is located near Cardiff Civic Centre. The proposed 5,200m2 development will present an opportunity for the school to reduce its reliance on its pre-experience MBA programme through the provision of a number of new premium-fee specialist masters courses and specialist MBAs and to create a more diverse student mix through increased home/EU postgraduate-taught student numbers.
