Kawneer Systems Satisfy In South London

The entire range of Kawneer’s architectural aluminium systems have been used to help meet exacting performance criteria for the mixed-use, mixed-tenure redevelopment of a brownfield site in south London.
Kawneer’s AA®201 unitised or modular/off-site curtain walling has been used alongside Kawneer’s AA®601 top/side-hung casement windows and AA®605 low/medium duty swing doors on the upper eight storeys of the Printworks development by First Base in Elephant and Castle.
This is complemented on the 1,152m² of ground-floor B1/D1 commercial space by Kawneer’s traditional, stick-frame assembled AA®110 zone/mullion drained curtain walling with 65mm sightlines. Vertical louvered glass screens also run the full height of the building, along with structural glazing on the stairwells.
Comprising 164 one, two and three bedroomed homes, Printworks was delivered in partnership with the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), the UK’s national regeneration agency.
Formerly the site of a HMSO printworks, the development is designed by internationally acclaimed Glenn Howells Architects and exemplifies First Base’s approach by incorporating innovative construction methods with brilliant design and exemplary sustainability standards.
The Kawneer systems were installed on the concrete-framed and post-tension floored building over nine months by Kawneer-approved specialist sub-contractor Drawn Metal. In conjunction with the Pullens Tenants and Residents Association, the design by Glenn Howells Architects sought to fuse older buildings with new development in the area.
Glenn Howells’ Harald Hugues said: “The entire building is made out of unitised panels which are all based on Kawneer profiles. Whilst performance criteria were the main driver, the system enabled us to achieve an aesthetic very close to the original design in terms of profile proportions and detailing in general.
“The acoustic performance requirements were very onerous. We had to achieve internal noise levels of 30dB during the night and day due to the site’s inner city location, next to a railway line. The Kawneer systems offered sufficient flexibility to meet the design criteria, and successful testing was carried out after completion.
“The required thermal performance was achieved easily and we obtained Secured By Design. The client was very satisfied with the final product and its unique façade design.”
Sean Cook, head of design at First Base said: “The Kawneer aluminium system simultaneously met our technical performance criteria, budget constraints and aesthetic aspirations. The bronze aluminium cladding was chosen to reflect the industrial history of the site and successfully blends innovative design with sympathy to existing buildings.”
