Sir Robert McAlpine
Aberdeen's new Marine Operations Centre was a demanding brief. Situated just two metres from the edge of the North Pier harbour wall, the building has to withstand high winds, cold winter temperatures and a wet, salty climate.
What's more, Aberdeen Harbour Board required a full 270º visibility, and Parr Architects devised this striking, faceted outward-sloping façade, featuring curtain walling alongside white reconstituted stone. Because the wind-swept building would be subject to higher-than-average building movements, Kawneer curtain walling system was chosen as it offered deeper sections and extra space in the glazing rebate to accommodate movement.
The Marine Operations Centre has won a Civic Trust Award for its bold design.
