£ 1.6 Million
The stylish, imposing six storey hotel, designed by Gordon Murray & Alan Dunlop Architects of Glasgow, features a combination of Kawneer’s 1202 zone drained curtain walling, 1203 mullion drained curtain walling in a sloped application, Kawneer tilturn windows and 505 doors.
Kawneer’s special projects team co-ordinated the design drawings and carried out the fabrication for the contract in close partnership with specialist contractor Henshaw, who also handled the installation.
The tilturn windows to the hotel rooms specified by the architect are particularly large at 1500mm x 1800mm. On the three elevations of the internal courtyard, they also form one element of a complex 2.3m x 2.6m composite unit, which includes a bottom hung vent and an opaque, insulated spandrel panel.
To achieve the architect’s aesthetic requirements and ensure the structural performance of the tilturn windows, a project-specific structural muntin was developed, which required the design of a new extrusion die.
The layout of the roof, which is raked at one side, had to incorporate some complicated connection details with regard to drainage. Consequently, the glazing design utilises the full range of sections within the 1203 mullion-drained system.
