CommercialRover Design & Engineering Centre
The Weedon Partnership
Exterior Profiles Ltd.
£ 3 Million
The ‘image’ brief given to architect, The Weedon Partnership for the design of the Centre was expressed as, “Rover 600, with a hint of Mini and more than a touch of 4 x 4”. The analogies with car design are reflected everywhere within the Centre’s design, both external and internal. For example, just like the Defender, Discovery or Range Rover, the building has a steel super structure with aluminium panel cladding.
Kawneer and EPL put together a detailed package for the external wall construction which included the development by Kawneer’s projects engineering department of a rainscreen cladding system, the RS100. The system is hung onto a carrier system, developed by Kawneer, which in turn is fixed to EPL’s EPSTEEL lining system with rockwool insulation. The RS100 was designed in accordance with the architect’s design and performance specification, and to interface with the 1200 Series curtain wall. In order to meet The Weedon Partnership’s desire for recessed and flushed glazing, specialist cladding and curtain wall interface details were engineered, such as returns, sofits and column clads.
