State-Of-The-Art Educational Facility Features High-Performing Kawneer Curtain Wall, Custom Glazed Veneer Systems, Entrances and Framing System
NORCROSS, Georgia – Located in Kansas City, Kansas, The University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) Health Education Building serves as the primary teaching facility for the schools of medicine, nursing and health professions. A range of curtain wall systems, storefront framing and entrances, from Kawneer Company, Inc. the leading manufacturer of architectural aluminum products and systems for commercial construction, help create its distinctive building-within-a-building design that illuminates the high-tech world within.
The “Lantern” Box
Designed by Los Angeles- based CO Architects and Kansas City, Missouri-based Helix Architecture + Design, KUMC features a transparent, glazed “lantern” box surrounding two interior structures, which are embedded with terracotta tubes, referred to as ribs. Both the school and design team also wanted the building to reflect connectivity and collaboration, so the design incorporates a glass-enclosed pedestrian bridge, which spans 250 feet across the site. Additionally, KUMC features a range of sustainable elements such as a green roof, LED lighting, heating and cooling controls, and more.
The project called for large expanses of glass throughout, which required the support of structural steel. Glazing contractor and installer JPI Glass, located in Kansas City, Missouri, worked with Kawneer to develop a custom glazed veneer system based on Kawneer’s 1600 Wall System™1 Curtain Wall and 1600 Wall System™2 Curtain Wall. The system was attached to structural steel tubes to not only support the size and weight of the glass, but also to fit within the budget.
