Featuring the Latest LEED Requirements and Credits, Kawneer’s Planning Tool Illustrates How Its Range of Products and Systems Can Help Architects Gain Valuable LEED Certification Points
NORCROSS, GA -- Kawneer Company, Inc., the leading manufacturer of architectural aluminum building products and systems for commercial construction, today announced the latest version of its LEED Planning Tool. Designed for use with the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System, the tool was developed using the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) LEED 2009 Reference Guide for Green Building Design and Construction, providing architects with the most current information and product recommendations.
The requirements for LEED certification continue to evolve and become more rigorous, making it essential for architects to have the most up-to-date information on tools and performance criteria during the development stage. Recently, the USGBC introduced the LEED 2009 Reference Guide for Green Building Design and Construction, a component of LEED Version 3 and a reorganization of the existing commercial and institutional LEED rating systems, with major enhancements made in harmonization, credit weightings, and regionalization. Kawneer’s updated LEED Planning Tool incorporates these newest LEED requirements and credits, including:
Energy and Atmosphere: Both categories, “Optimize Energy Performance” and “On-site Renewable Energy”, have been expanded to reflect increased point availability and methods to gain points. Kawneer’s high-performance thermal and sun control products, and architectural grade operable windows and ventilators can help gain credits in the "Optimize Energy Performance" category. In addition, Kawneer's 1600 PowerWall®, 1600 PowerSlope® and 1600 PowerShade® can contribute to the "On-site Renewable Energy" requirements for an architect's next building project.
Indoor Environmental Quality: Though the number of available points in the Daylight and Views (Daylight 75% of Spaces) category has not changed from the previous version of LEED, the methods of gaining points has been expanded and now includes: simulation, prescriptive, a combination of simulation and prescriptive, and measurement.  Kawneer's curtain walls, windows, sliding doors, 2000 Skylight, 1600 SunShade® and InLighten® Light Shelf can help introduce daylight and views into a building.

Innovation and Design Process: In this category, available points have increased from four to five and Kawneer has added a list of Cradle to CradleSM certified products.  Recently, Kawneer’s 1600 Wall System®1 and 1600 Wall System®2, InLighten® Light Shelf and 1600 SunShade® were awarded Cradle to Cradle (C2C) environmental product certification at the Silver level. C2C is an independent U.S. environmental certification process for materials and products, assessing the total impact of a product on human health and the environment.
Keeping with its familiar format, Kawneer’s updated LEED Planning Tool guides architects to specific Kawneer products and solutions that can help in achieving LEED certification goals. The tool ties “Potential Points” based on the recommended products and systems for each relevant LEED category. This allows users to estimate the number of points that projects can earn and track their progress toward certification in the “Earned Points” column of the tool.
“The changes to the LEED rating system reflect the industry’s ongoing commitment to sustainable building practices and the opportunities that lie within advancements in building technologies to help achieve overall green goals,” said Lisa Szematowicz, LEED AP, and Associate Product Manager for Kawneer. “Our LEED Planning Tool continues to serve as a valuable resource for architects, keeping them informed on certification requirements and ensuring they have timely resources available.”

As a member of the USGBC, the industry group that developed LEED, Kawneer is dedicated to developing products and systems that help comply with LEED standards and promote integrated, whole-building design practices. Its comprehensive LEED Planning Tool underscores the company’s significant focus on sustainability. In addition to its portfolio of thermal and solar products, Kawneer’s Architectural Services Team (AST) is available to help with product applications and technical assistance.
