Fayetteville High School
Phase II
Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA
To accommodate the diverse needs of an ever-growing student body, Fayetteville High School rebuilt the traditional learning environment from the ground up. The combined talents of three architectural firms led a multi-phased construction project to create a 530,000-square-foot campus. The campus is large enough to house a student population of 3,000, yet designed around the principle of multiple, autonomous small learning communities (SLCs), averaging around 700 students each. Special focus was put into creating brightly-lit, unconventional learning spaces to inspire the next generation to think outside the box.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
While the new Fayetteville High School was built upon the foundation of the previous smaller building, maintaining its central location in the community, it nonetheless managed to build a new identity forged around the need to connect the building to the outside. The school’s interior is illuminated by 28,000-square-feet of curtainwall and 14,000-square-feet of storefront glass, creating an open, airy design that helps foster a healthy environment for students and teachers.
The main entrance was repositioned to create a more inviting, visible entry into the high school, and the open floor plan allows natural light throughout the renovated building. Another prominent design feature is the large southward-facing windows overlooking a landscaped student commons area, which create a collegiate campus feel reflective of the school’s ties to the University of Arkansas. Along with other sustainable features - including the use of recycled building materials and energy-efficient environmental-control systems - this contributed to LEED Gold certification of the building.
CHALLENGES
- The construction process occurred over four years with continuous operation of the school during the build.
- The project was a mix of both new construction and demolition/renovation of the previous campus which housed structures from various eras.
SOLUTIONS
- Completing the modernization in a phased approach with much of the demolition done over the summer period kept the faculty and students safe and in class.
- The new design unifies FHS's many facilities, creating a new identity and interface with the public.
