AAMA 501.8 HUMAN IMPACT STANDARD

Human impact resistance is an increasingly important consideration in healthcare and behavioral health environments, where glazing systems may be exposed to accidental or intentional impact. In patient rooms, corridors and common areas, architects must balance occupant safety, visibility, natural light and aesthetics while meeting demanding performance requirements.

To help address these challenges, the AAMA 501.8 standard establishes rigorous testing requirements for fenestration systems used in environments where occupant safety is a critical concern. Systems qualified to AAMA 501.8 are evaluated for their ability to withstand significant human impact forces while maintaining the integrity of the framing and glazing assembly.

Kawneer’s IR 521/521T Storefront Framing System and 1600UT System™1 Curtain Wall have been tested to the AAMA 501.8 Human Impact standard, providing documented performance data for healthcare and behavioral health applications. In addition to human impact qualification, the IR 521 system also offers hurricane impact and forced-entry performance, allowing multiple project requirements to be addressed through a single storefront platform.

AAMA 501.8 QUALIFICATION HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Tested in accordance with AAMA 501.8 at an impact energy of not less than 1,356 joules (1,000 ft-lb).
  • No opening permitting passage of a 50 mm (2-inch) sphere under an applied force of 18N (4lb).
  • No disengagement of framing, anchors, hinges or locking devices that would permit unintended opening or egress.
  • No framing or hardware components accessible to the occupant side following testing.
